Thomas Lyon

Keosauqua Republican, Nov. 5, 1936

Thomas Grover Lyon was born March 4, 1893, on a farm near Stockport, iowa. He was the son of Thomas W. and Mary L. Lyon and grew to manhood in the community in which he was born.

He was united in marriage to Linnie L. Logan of Mt. Sterling, Iowa, July 5, 1918, at Waco, Texas. To this union was born an only child, Thelma LaVon.

In the spring of 1918, he entered the World War. He was in training for four months at Waco, Texas, where he became a member of the 7th Division, Headquarters Company, 64th Infantry. He was transferred to Camp meritt, New Jersey, and after a few days sailed for France, where he remained for over a year, part of which time he was in active service near Metz. He returned to the States in June, 1919, and began his civilian career on a farm in Van Buren county. For years he was employed with the Kearns Construction Company and for the Past six years with the Van Buren County Bridge Company.

After an illnes of only a few days he passed away at his home in Keosauqua, Iowa, October 21, 1936 at the age of 43 years, 7 months, and 17 days. He was a dutiful son, a loving husband and father and was ever thoughtful of the small things in life.

Besides his devoted wife and daughter, he leaves to mourn his loss his aged parents and Virginia who have made their home with him and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. C. L. Calhoun of Agency, Iowa, Mrs. Melvin Nail and Robert F. Lyon of Kansas City, Kansas; Mrs. Mary Moore and Edd Lyon of Stockport, Iowa; Mrs. Ray Meck, Mrs. Lloyd Johnson and Eugene Lyon of Birmingham, Iowa; Mrs. R. L. Brightwell of Ottumwa, Iowa; Miss Ida Mae Lyon of Burlington, Iowa; Miss Gladys Lyon of Hillsboro, Iowa and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral servces were held from the Keowauqua Methodist church, Friday afternoon, October 23, 1936, in charge of the minister, the Rev. C. Hugo Orf. Interment was in the Purdom cemetery.

**Transcriber note: This would have been my great-grandfather. His daughter, Harriet Lyon Meck, was my grandmother. Her youngest son, Donald Lee Meck, was my father.**
