Mathew E. Harlan, son of Cyrus and Martha Harlan, was born in Wayne County, Indiana, July 16, 1854 and passed away at his home in Hillsboro, Iowa July 11, 1936, after a lingering illness of many months at the age of eightyone years, eleven months and fifteen days. He came with his parents when three months of age in a covered wagon from Indiana to Iowa, crossing the Mississippi river at Burlington on a ferry boat, and located on the Harlan Homestead two miles south of Hillsboro which is now known at the Milt Stillwell farm.

He was the second child in a family of four children, all having preceded him in death. He grew to manhood in and around the vicinity of Hillsboro and received his education in local schools and at the old Bentonsport Academy.

On April 22, 1875 he was married to Jennie J. Hammond at Ft. Madison, Iowa and to this union were born two children, Walter A. and Harriet E. Collins of Hillsboro, Iowa.

He united with the Christian church at Big Mound, Iowa at 12 years of age and when the Christian church at Hillsboro was organized he became a charter member and continued faithfully in active service, serving as superintendent of Sunday school for 32 years until his health failed him.

Those that he leaves behind to mourn his passing are his wife, his son and daughter, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held in Hillsboro Monday afternoon. Interment was in the Hillsboro cemetery.
