Shining Light Extinguished

Mrs. A. B. Bittner (nee Nelly Piper) died at her home in Canton, Ill. Aug. 30th, of a brain fever, after an illness of a few days. She leaves two children, a boy and a girl. Her husband and she were teachers of German at Canton college. The funeral occurred Sept. 2nd, at Canton. The writer, who was a schoolmate of this bright woman, remembers her as a kind good natured girl of rare talent, studious in the highest degree and much admired by her teachers, Prof’s Lindsay and English, both of whom, like she, have passed out into the great beyond.

She and George H. Welch and the writer took the teachers’ examination under County Superintendent J. H. Landes, at the Bonaparte school house and there received their first certificate. Mrs. Bittner afterwards taught successful terms of school in Illinois, and later attended the Indiana State Normal at Valparaiso, Indiana, graduating there with honors.
