John W. Kritzman
John Winfield Kritzman was born January 11, 1861, near Payson, Adams Co., Ill., and departed this life at the Ottumwa hospital, Feb. 6, 1935 at the age of 74 years and 25 days.
After being in failing health for almost a year, he underwent a serious surgical operation, Oct. 13, 1934, but all that medial skill and loving care could do in both home and hospital failed to restore the patient sufferer to health.
When but a small boy he moved with his parents to Van Buren Co., Iowa, in which county he resided the remainder of his life. On Feb. 26, 1885, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Weiss, at Quincy, Ill. To this union were born seven children, namely, Hannah M., Mrs. Edd Shobe; Wallace J.; Alma I.; Edith P.; Clara E.; and Elmer E.; all of whom were present at the bedside during the last few days of his illness. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Carrie Williams, of Mesa, Arizona, one grandson, four granddaughters and other relatives and friends.
He united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Lebanon, Iowa about 36 years ago where he continued his membership until his death, being a firm, steadfast believer in Christianity.
His wife preceded him in death, Jan. 17, 1918 and during the intervening years his home was made comfortable by his daughters who resided at home with him. Mr. Kritzman was a good father and an honest, quiet, industrious man of estimable character. Although for sometime deprived of active work by his illness, his interest in his work never failed.
He will be greatly missed by his children. His place can never be filled, but the sorrowing ones trust and feel that all is well.
Funeral services were held at the Lebanon church, Saturday, Feb. 9, 1935, the Rev. Lloyd Tennant, of Bloomfield, in charge. Music by a select duet consisting of Mrs. Claire Muir and Mrs. Hazen Beeler, with Mrs. Paul Wilson at the piano. Interment was in Lebanon cemetery.
