Miss Alice Wright
Alice, eldest daughter of Christopher and Martha Hearne Wright, was born on a farm south of Keosauqua in the Center Chapel neighborhood on June 6, 1870, and departed this life at Keosauqua, May 15, 1934, at the age of 63 years, 11 months and 9 days.
In her youth she was converted and joined the Center Chapel church. She remained a devoted member of that church until she moved with the family to Keosauqua when she became an equally faithful member of the Methodist church here. She taught in the Sunday school; was active in the Epworth League; served as recording secretary of the Woman's Foreign Missionary society. She was a steward for a number of years and a member of the W.C.T.U., was a most efficient member of the Ruthean society until her death. In each of these positions she gave unstinted service, faithful to the last ounce of her strength.
One of her many good qualities was that of generosity. She knew and practiced the truth of the Scripture, "It is more blessed to give than to receive". She loved flowers devotedly and the garden which she and her sister tended was a thing of beauty to which many visitors came, and never did one leave without a gift of flowers. Many are the persons of this community who are debtors to Alice Wright for a bouquet of flowers on joyful or sad occasions. One of her last acts was to remember a neighbor with a gift from the vegetable garden.
Faithfulness and honesty were the outstanding virtues of her life. If she promised to do a thin, it was done, even though at much cost of strength and time. If she had an obligation, she could not rest until it was paid.
The sole survivor of the family is her sister, Miss Mary Wright, to whom sympathy of the whole community goes out. The two sisters have continued to live together in the home since the death of their mother twelve years ago. A sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Wright Eyestone, died in Foo Chow, China in 1907. Her father passed away the following year and her brother, John Wright in 1933.
Besides her sister Mary, she leaves a sister-in-law, Mrs. John Wright.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, May 17, at 2 o'clock, in charge of Rev. M.E. Hayes. Interment was made in Purdom cemetery.
