Helen Aletha Smith
Helen Aletha, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Smith, was born near Cantril, April 26, 1909, on what is known as her grandfather Smith's farm home and passed away at her home May 11, 1934, at 7:15 a.m.
She suffered for five years, but through all her severe affliction kept cheerful, usually saying, "I am all right." Knowing that she could not live, she expressed her confidence and hope in Jesus.
During the pastorate of Rev. A.M. Smith, she united with the Methodist church at Cantril, Iowa, and was a faithful member until her death. She was also a member of the Pythian Sister Order No. 124.
Helen was graduated from the Cantril high school with the class of 1928 and attended summer school at Parsons college in 1929.
During her extended illness her mother and father were faithfully by her bedside with tender care. During her illness, one of her comforts was her little niece and nephew. Her father, mother and sisters were with her at the last.
She leaves her father, mother, two sisters, Irene and Isabelle, little niece and nephew, her aged grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. Jack Kirkhart.
Funeral services were held from the M.E. church at 2 p.m. Sunday in charge of her pastor, the Rev. H.F. Gilbert, assisted by Elder H.C. Shaw, Mrs. J.C. Hall, Mrs. H.F. Gilbert, B.C. Casady and Junior Wellborn sang "The Old Rugged Cross", "In the Garden" and "Going Down the Valley". The pallbearers were cousins, George Norris, Wayne Powell, Craig Smith, Paul Powell, Jesse Kirkhart and Raymond Smith. Burial was made in the Cantril cemetery.
