Mrs. Laura Sawdon

Laura R., daughter of Isaac R. and Mary J. Hayes, was born Feb. 12, 1857 on a farm near Ft. Madison and passed away at her home in Farmington, April 1, 1935, after a lingering illness of two years duration. She was 78 years, 1 month and 20 days of age.

She was united in marriage with William P. Sawdon at Ft. Madison, Iowa, May 22, 1879. Two sons and two daughters blessed this union and live to mourn the departure of their mother. They are, Ray Sawdon, of Keokuk, Iowa; Harry Sawdon, of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Joseph Carver, of Norwood, Colo.; and Mrs. Jesse Bradford, of Farmington, Iowa. Fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren are left.

The deceased leaves one half-brother, Will Hayes, of Ft. Madison, Iowa. One brother and two sisters preceded her in death some years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Sawdon went to Larned, Kan. and resided on a farm there for one year after their marriage and then moved on a farm near Ft. Madison. Thirty-seven years of her life was spent in or near Farmington. Mrs. Sawdon's husband preceded her in death, October 24, 1933. On April 10, 1933 she was stricken with paralysis and she has never spoken a word since. Her husband passed away just seven months after her affliction. Her daughter, Mrs. Jesse Bradford then took her to her home near Bonaparte and cared for her there until Jan. 24, 1935 when she was moved back to her own home in Farmington, Iowa.

Everything was done for her that loving care could do, but on Monday evening, April 1 she quietly passed away.

She was a faithful member of the Royal Neighbor lodge of Bonaparte, Mizpha Chapter Eastern Star and Rebekah lodge of Farmington, and the White Shrine of Ft. Madison.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 4, in the Farmington Methodist church, by the Rev. Harvey Butler, assisted by Mrs. H.E. Butler. She was laid to rest in the Farmignton cemetery.
