Winfield Scott Doud
Winfield Scott Doud was born at Douds, Iowa, Feb. 13, 1849 and passed away at Washington, after a serious illness of many months Feb. 23, 1935, at the age of 86 years and 10 days.
His father was a pioneer settler for whom the town of Douds was named. He grew to manhood on the farm, learned the first elements of a business career at eighteen and started to work as a clerk and bookkeeper in a general store at Douds. He later became a telegraph operator, printer, furniture dealer and salesman.
He married Florence Henshie, at Mitchellville, who preceded him in death sixteen years ago. Two sons Howard, who now lives in Des Moines and Hubert, of Winterset, were born to this union.
Since 1921, he made his home with is son, Hubert, first at Wellman and later at Riverside. he also spent a part of his time with his son, Howard in Des Moines.
He united with the Methodist church in young manhood and was active in church and choir work for many years.
Besides his sons he is survived by two grandsons, a brother, A.L. Doud, of Douds, and a sister, Mrs. Melissa Harwood, of Keosauqua.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. church at Riverside, Tuesday morning in charge of the Rev. Fred Miller. The body was taken to Winterset immediately following the service at Riverside. Brief services were held at a funeral home, with interment beside his wife.
