Joseph T. Syfert
Joseph Talbot Syfert, son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Syfert, was born August 15, 1859, on a farm near Mt. Zion, Iowa, and departed this life at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 1935, at his home in Keosauqua, Iowa, at the age of 75 years, 6 months, and 6 days.
On February 13, 1895, he was united in marriage with Winnie E. Lazenby. To this union were born two children, a daughter, Mrs. Eva Cook, of New Brunswick, N.J., and a son, Lloyd C., of Keosauqua, Iowa.
He spent most of his life the community in which he was reared, except for two years which were spent in the state of Illinois. It was while there that he accepted Christ as his Savior. He lived and died in that Faith, wholly resigned to the Divine will. He later transferred his membership to the Mt. Zion Presbyterian church. During the time he lived in Keosauqua, when health permitted, he with his wife, attended the Methodist church here.
He spent his life as a farmer. In the spring of 1923 he moved to Keosauqua, but still spent much of his time out at the farm.
He was stricken with a heart attack on September 5, 1934. Since that time he had been confined to his home. He enjoyed the company of his many neighbors and friends who called to see him.
He was a man who was loved and respected by those who knew him best. Honesty and integrity were the strong points of his character.
Besides his wife and two children, those left to mourn his departure are: one brother, Ed Syfert of Birmingham, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Loofburrough, of Hollister, Calif., and Mrs. Ellen Grieves, of Tonapah, Nevada; one half brother, Jim Syfert of Mt. Zion, Iowa; and one half sister, Mrs. Allie Kisling of Stockport, Iowa. Two grandchildren and a host of other relatives, neighbors and friends. Surely we can say again, a good man has gone from our midst.
