Mrs. Bertha Gilbert
Bertha May Maxwell, daughter of Sloan and Laura I. Maxwell, was born near Selma, Iowa January 23, 1889 and departed this life at her home near Kilbourne June 2, 1936, being 47 years, 5 months and 9 days old. She was married to Emmett Gilbert January 27, 1909 at Mt. Zion, Iowa by Rev. Jerry Kremmyre. To this union were born twin daughters, Ruth, now Mrs. Arnold Barker, residing near Birmingham, and Rachel at home. Her husband, daughters, son-in-law, and little grandson, Donald are mourning the loss of a devoted wife and mother, whose home and kindred were her world. She was one of a family of eight children. Her parents, three brothers and one sister preceded her in death. The sisters who survive are Mrs. Retta Glasgow of Muscatine; Mrs. Ben Ewing of Mt. Zion; Mrs. Ray Martin of near Kilbourne. Many other relatives and friends will hear with sorrow of her demise. Her entire life was spent in this vicinity. She will be sadly missed.
A very large crowd attended the funeral services at the Kilbourne church Thursday afternoon with burial in the nearby cemetery. Rev. H.C. Druse preached from John 11:12. "Lord if he sleeps He will do well." Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Barker very feelingly sang two numbers with Mrs. Stong at the piano.
