Obituary.
From Seymour Democrat:
Sarah Ellen Callen was born near Bonaparte, Iowa, June 7, 1846, died at her home in Seymour, Feb. 8, 1908, aged 61 years, 8 months and 1 day.
She was married to Irwin W. Speers at Bonaparte, March 13, 1866. In the fall of 1879 they moved to the farm east of Seymour, but remained only one year, returning to Van Buren County. In the fall of 1875 they moved on the farm east of Seymour, where they remained a number of years until their children attained their majority; while here, Carrie, at the age of 18, passed into the land beyond.
When 16 years of age, deceased united with the Baptist church at Bonaparte and has for years been a faithful member of the Seymour church. Her quiet, consistent life has been an inspiration to many hearts. Unselfish in her ministry at home and in the church, she was ever planning for the happiness of others and forgetful of herself. More enduring than marble, is the monument she has left in the memories of her loved ones and friends, to whom ministering in love was ever her highest delight.
Besides a husband she leaves to mourn her departure three children, W. M. and A. P. Speers of Centerville, and Mrs. Mabel Peters of Seymour. Two sisters, Miss Francis Callen and Mrs. N. C. Kerr of Bonaparte and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted from the Baptist Church by the pastor assisted by Rev. Jay. D. Vannoy of Centerville on Monday, Feb. 10, 1908. Many friends were present assuring the bereaved family of sympathy. Burial in Woodlawn.
