In Memoriam.
Mrs. Lucy Anne Leavitt Cline, oldest daughter of Johnathan H. and Lydia Cheney, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. A. Whitmore, Sept. 1, 1912, aged 89 years, 4 months and 20 days.
Sometime, somehow, and some place, the statement, substantially, may be made of all of us; but of the few, very few, will there be added, those sincere words of praise that now find expression on every lip in the community as they speak of the beautiful, noble, Christian life now so peacefully closed.
Grandma Cline was born at Sanbornton, New Hampshire, April 12, 1823.
Oct. 27, 1846 she was married to John S.? Leavitt who died June 4, 1864. To this union five children had been born, two of them dying in childhood, and one, Frank, May 21, 1903.
In 1865 the deceased, with her family came from N. H. to Bonaparte, Iowa, where she has since resided having united in marriage with Adam Cline Feb. 18, 1866, and who preceded her to his final reward some 14 years.
She became a member of the Baptist Church during the winter of ’74 or ’75 and continued in that faith, although she worshiped at the M. E. Church and expressed a wish, some years ago to be buried from it; she has ever been a faithful Christian, her religion proving itself and her never failing goodness to her large family of children and grandchildren, neighbors and friends alike, never wearying in her household duties and ever ready as a “Friend in Need.” She was indeed “Mother to them all."
Since her husband's death, April 3rd ’98 she has made her home with her children Mrs. Lydia Whitmore, Bonaparte, Iowa, and Charles Leavitt, Mt. Zion, Iowa, and in these homes she will be missed as only a "grandmother" can be who has the same contented mind, amiable, sunny disposition and sweet smile. In these homes, although free from household cares, she was never idle. These helpful hands knit lace, pieced and quoted quilts, until within one month of her death: and but few of her many friends but what have keepsakes made by those willing hands. No day’s work was completed until the paper was read and also the nightly chapter from her well loved Bible.
She leaves, to bless and cherish her memory, one brother, B. F. Cheney, residing at Overton, N. b., one daughter Mrs. H A Whitmore, one son Charles Leavitt, and a well loved stepdaughter, Mrs. Sarah Seaver, Naveda, Mo.. Also 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 1 great, great grandchild, 26 step grand children and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. J H Taylor, pastor of the M E Church, who gave an able discourse from room Rev. 14:18 were held at 2 PM Sept. 4, after which interment was made in the Bonaparte Cemetery, there to await a happy resurrection morn, when the “Righteous shall meet their God."
