Death Caused by Kick of Mule

Lewis Cummins, who died at the Graham hospital at Keokuk at 6:00 o'clock Monday evening, Jan. 6, 1936, had been engaged in farm work and in driving his team of mules up to the time, a week ago Monday, when he was injured by a kick in the abdomen from one of the mules. He was taken to the hospital on Sunday afternoon where he underwent an operation for hernia from which he did not rally. He had reached the age of 80 years, 1 month and 24 days.

Mr. Cummins was born Nov. 12, 1855 in a log cabin one and a half miles south of Bonaparte. This was on the old Cummins farm which Lewis later bought and operated for many years, or until he and his wife moved to Bonaparte about fourteen years ago. His entire life was spent near or in Bonaparte, and he was known by everyone as a hard working, thrifty farmer, fair in his dealings with his fellow men.

He was the son of Robert and Sarah Myers Cummins, pioneer settlers in this part of the country. His father had emigrated from Ireland, and his mother was a native of Ohio.

Jan. 22, 1891, Lewis Cummins was united in marriage with Miss Kate Wagner, of Bonaparte, who now is left to mourn her loss of a devoted husband. There is also left of his immediate family one sister, Mrs. Bell Wagner of Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon from the home of his wife's sister, Miss Mollie Wagner in Bonaparte, with Rev. Hayes of Keosauqua in charge. Interment in the Bonaparte cemetery.
