William H. Monroe 1837-1919

William H. Monroe died at his home in Keokuk, Iowa, 14 Aug. 1919 of apoplexy. He was born in New Jersey, 20Feb. 1837 his age when death called him being 82 y. 5m. 20 d. He was married to Anna McCormick, 4 May, 1862 in Fairfield, Ia. where they resided until the opening of the Civil War.

4 Jan. 1864, he enlisted in Co. F third Iowa Cavalry and was discharged at Atlanta, Georgia, 9Aut. 1865. Following the war he engaged in his trade at Keosauqua as wagon maker.

His wife died in Sept. 1892. To them were born five children, George of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, Mollie, Mrs. M. E. Leach of Iron Mountain, Michigan; Nellie, Mrs. S. J. Green of Jacksonville, Florida, who preceded him in death; Laura, Mrs. Arthur Childs of Chicago, Illinois; Norma, Mrs. Chas. Cocherell of Keosauqua, Iowa; a brother Joe in Pennsylvania, and a number of grandchildren.

He was a member of the G. A. R. that order holding services at Keokuk before the body was brought to Keosauqua, for burial, where he was laid to rest by the side of his wife in Purdom Cemetery, services at the grave being by the G.A.R. and singing by Mr. Miller and Mr. Neafie. The pall bearers were soldiers of the late war, members of the A.E.F. viz:James Wilson, Paul Brownlee, H.E. Rees, Thad Sherod, Bryan Parrott and Albert McIntosh.

We wish to thank the friends, especially the soldiers, for their kindness in the burial of our father.
