WILLIAM IRVIN NEFF

William Irvin Neff, the third son of George and Lucinda Neff was born in Clark county, Mo., November 12, 1861, and passed away at his home in LaJara, Colorado, on June 30, 1934.

He was married to Abbie A. Burrier May 11, 1887, and to them was born one daughter, Nora Mae Neff Fluckey, who resides near the parental home.

He leaves to mourn his devoted wife with whom he lived 47 years; his daughter and six grandchildren, as follows: Paul Roger, Cecile, Shirley, Wallace and Dale Fluckey and one grandson, Owen, who preceded him in death, also one brother, John C. Neff and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Enderweise and Mrs. Maggie Story all of Farmington, Ia.

William Neff grew to manhood near Acasto, Mo., where he lived until in 1886, he traveled west and located at Leadville, Colo. From there he and his wife went south in 1891 to San Louis Valley. At that time the valley was mostly unsettled and unproductive. Hence he was instrumental in its progress as a pioneer citizen using his genius and thrift to establish modern methods of farming and stock raising, being one of the foremost breeders of Shorthorn cattle and Hamiltonian horses and the owner of “Chantress” one of the best mares produced from Kentucky stock.

After making a splendid success of agriculture and stock raising he added to his activities the service of Commissioner for Irrigation Water in 1911 and continued in this work until his death,

He was affiliated with the Masonic Order for many years taking the 32 degree in 1918. He was also a steadfast member in the organization of Modern Woodman and most truly and devotedly he was a helper to all mankind rounding out his days with completeness of service to his Master, his family and his friends.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church at LaJara, Colo., on July 3, conducted by Rev. McConlee and the Masonic Order from Alamosa. His remains were taken to the Christy cemetery at Acasto, Mo., where he was laid to rest on July 7th, near the graves of his parents. Services at the grave by Mt. Moriah Lodge No, 27 A. F. & A. M., of Farmington, Ia. Brother Eugene Jenkins acting W. M.
