Mrs. Amanda Jane McCrary, daughter of Lewis and Emeline Alfrey was born on a farm near Farmington, April 3, 1847 and departed this life December 4, 1936 at 8:30 p.m. She was eighty-nine years, eight months and one day of age at the time of her death.

January 26, 1868, she and Minor McCreary(sic) were united in marriage in Vernon, Van Buren County, Iowa. Five children comprised their family, Clarence Baxter McCrary, Bonaparte, Iowa; Myrtle Matilda McCrary, deceased; Thomas William McCrary, deceased; George Forrest McCrary, Springfield, Mo.; and Mrs. Helen A. Riley of Chicago, who so ably cared for her mother for the last twelve years of her life. Mrs. McCrary’s husband, who was a Civil War Veteran and who was blind the last fifty-nine years of his life died Sept. 17, 1923.

She leaves two grandchildren, Keith McCrary of Bonaparte, Iowa and Mrs. Vera Pallman of California.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. McCrary moved to a farm south of Vernon and lived there until Mr. McCrary lost his sight and then they moved to town. Practically all her life was spent in Van Buren county.

Mrs. McCrary was a member of the Farmington Congregational church for many years.

She was a woman with a friendly and neighborly disposition, having the interests of her husband and family in mind and a motherly and neighborly attitude toward her friends and neighbors.

She was especially interested in the unfortunate and people, who were in sorrow or needed counsel could find help in her.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church at Farmington, Sunday, Dec. 6, 1936 at 1 a.m.(sic). The Rev. Harvey E. Butler conducted the funeral service. Burial was in Vernon cemetery near Bentonsport.
