Mrs. Lavina Ellen Lowery, daughter of Timothy and Martha Ruark, was born near Farmington, Iowa, October 2, 1851. She spent all her life in or near Farmington.
She was united in marriage to Thomas J. Lowery on Oct. 19, 1873, in Farmington, by Henry Benson, Esquire. Mr. and Mrs. Lowery l8ived on a farm west of Farmington, until about twenty years ago, at which time they moved to Farmington. To this union was born three daughters, Mary, Anna and Bertha.
Mr. and Mrs. Lowery were united with the First Baptist Church at Farmington, during the ministry of Rev. W. A. Nelson. They were converted in the Baptist Mission held at Flat Rock, which was under the supervision of Rev. M. C. Alexander. They were both baptized by Rev. Nelson, and became active in the work of their church.
After nearly three weeks of confinement to her bed, Mrs. Lowery was called from this life, while at her home, Wednesday, August 5, 1936, at the age of 84 years, 10 months, and three days. She had been in poor health for a number of years.
She leaves to mourn her going, her three daughters, Mrs. Mary Woods, Mrs. Annie White, and Mrs. Bertha Story; her sister, Mrs. Mary Bowles, all of Farmington; nine grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed from this life September 23, 1923. She was also preceded by one sister, Christinia; her brother, Seth W. Ruark; and one granddaughter, Grace Woods Poole.
The funeral was held in the First Baptist Church, Farmington Friday, August 7, 2:00 p.m. conducted by her pastor, Rev. M. R. Rogers. The message was “Our People With God”, the text being taken from Rom. 5:1. The hymns “Going Down The Valley” and “The City Foursquare” were sung by Mrs. Halfman, Miss Elanore La Follette, Thomas La Follette and Bob Page, with Mrs. Carrie Boyer as pianist.
Rev. H. E. Butler, pastor of the M. E. Church assisted.
Burial was in the Farmington Cemetery.
