WALTER L. SMITH

Walter L. Smith, 64, of 414 East Finley avenue, died at 5:15 a.m. Sunday at 245 South Willard street.

He was the son of Jasper and Amanda Smith and was born May 6, 1880, in Van Buren county. He had been a resident of Ottumwa for the past 33 years. He was a member of the Boilermakers’ union.

Surviving are two children, V. R. Smith of Ottumwa and Mrs. LaVeva Treanor of Lansing, Mich., and one stepdaughter, Mrs. Nettie Post of Ottumwa. His mother, Mrs. Amanda Smith of Milton, and 10 grandchildren also survive, as do five brothers, George Smith, Des Moines; Lester Smith, Chicago; Olin Smith, Chicago; Bennie Thompson, Ottumwa, and Neal Smith, Sioux City, and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Amend, Des Moines; Mrs. Amy Cox, Des Moines, and Mrs. Ella Corrick of Bunch.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie, in 1939, his father, three brothers and one sister.

The body is at the Johnson funeral chapel awaiting completion of funeral arrangements. The casket will be taken to the residence, 414 East Finley avenue, Tuesday morning.
