Elizabeth Scofield, aged nearly seventy-nine years, died March 5, 1899. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 12, 1820, and was the daughter of Nathaniel and Margaret D. Williams.

She was married June 16, 1840, to Rev. Edward Scofield, who had just graduated from Lane Theological Seminary, by Rev. Horace Bushnell, long City Missionary in Cincinnati. They went soon after to their first home in North Bend, Ohio. They lived in several towns and cities in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois; finally in 1874, settling in Somonauk; where over twenty years since she was left a widow, committed to the care of eight children, four daughters, three sons and a beloved son-in-law.

She, early in life, united with the church and has ever been a devoted Christian, who loved and read her bible through every year for a long time. She was an invalid many years, shut off from church privileges, but her daily prayers for those who proclaimed the gospel and her earnest entreaties for the conversion of the heathen world will never be forgotten by her children and grandchildren of whom she was very fond. There were ten children born, four of whom are in the heavenly land to greet her there.

She was patient in all her years of suffering—ever ready and anxious to go whenever her Lord should call her, frequently saying when her children came home: “I should like to die now when so many of you are here.” If there was one trait more noticeable in her character than another, it was her purity of thought. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. Her children rise up and call her blessed.

Funeral services were head at her late home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock conducted by Rev. R. E. Helms. She lies at rest in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Those present from abroad were Mrs. Julia McCartney, Metropolis, Ill.; Rev. Edward Scofield, Mooers, N. Y.; Rev. Wm. H. Scofield, Bonaparte, Iowa; Mr. George H. Sisson, New York City and Edward A. Sisson, Cincinnati, Ohio. – Somonauk Reveille
