DEATH OF GEORGE TEAL

Old Well Known Citizen Passed Away.

George Teal, two miles west of Utica, died Friday, Jan. 8. Mr. Teal was one of the old settlers of the county, coming here in 1850 when he was 17 years old. About the first employment he had was the Meek & Sons of Bonaparte, the firm then consisting of Wm. Meek and his two sons Robert and Isiah, his work being hauling timber and teaming generally, living in the Meek family. Later he bought a farm west of Utica in Washington township, where he resided until his death.

Jan. 25, 1864 the deceased was united in marriage to Miss Rebecca B. Stewart, and to them were born two sons, John H. and Castor M., and two daughters, Mrs. Elmer Mort and Mrs. L.F. Edwards. The wife and children and four grand children and two brothers, Wm. and Thos. Teal, are left to mourn their loss.

George Teal was born in Yorkshire, England, Sept. 3, 1833. He came with his parents to the United States in 1848. The family first located in Pennsylvania but two years afterwards came to this county. We had know the deceased for 35 years or more. He was a caller two or three times a year, and we were always glad to meet him. He was a close reader of current events. He had taken one or more copies of the Democrat for more than 30 years, and also took the New York World, St. Louis Republic, Homestead and perhaps other papers. Reading was one of his chief sources of enjoyment, although he was of a social disposition and good company. We shall miss him as will many others.

The funeral was held at Miller chapel on Tuesday, the 12th. Rev. Chas. E. Perkins of this place delivered the funeral discourse. Although it was a cold day, there was a large attendance at the funeral and a large choir assisted in the services, testifying to the regard in which the deceased was held in the community where he had lived so long. The interment was at the Miller chapel cemetery.

"Our father's dust is left alone
And silent under Winter's snows."

-George Geal of Washington township was a visitor in town yesterday and called. We were surprised to see him wearing a pair of shoes. George is about seventy years old, and this is the first pair of shoes he has worn for forty-seven years. He always wore boots with his pants in top of them whether at a dance, a wedding, a funeral or at church, though he has not been a devoted attendant on the latter. However he recently found another pair of boots that fits him, and the present shoes will soon have to go, for he proposes to return to his old love of boots with pants in their tops.
