Oscar Morrow Burned To Death At His Home In Douds

Believed To Have Fallen Asleep While Smoking; Son Discovers Tragic Accident

**Handwritten: Dec. 16 1944

Oscar T. Morrow, 61, retired mail carrier, was fatally burned Saturday night by a fire at his home which is believed to have started between ten and eleven o'clock, when he fell asleep while smoking.

His body was found by his son Dale, who was returning to his own home nearby after being downtown. He noticed an odd reflection of light on the window and after passing the house had a hunch something was wrong and returned. He summoned aid to extinguish the fire and his father's body was found on the floor. To all appearances, Mr. Morrow's clothing had caught on fire and he had made a desperate attempt to put out the flames before he was overcome. The clothing was burned off his body and the rug and dresser had been afire.

Funeral services were held on Sunday at the Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds in charge of The Rev. E.K. Parrott. Burial was ion the Zion Lutheran cemetery.

He is survived by his son Dale, of Douds; three daughters, Mrs. Vane Wiley of Douds, Mrs. Donald Jones of Ottumwa and Mrs. Ray Randall of Keosauqua; six grand-children; one brother, George Morrow of Enid, Okla. and one sister, Mrs. C.A. Liming of Hillsdale, Okla. His wife died several years ago.
