William Grant Hanshaw, son of William and Mary Jackson Hanshaw, was born February 22, 1863, on a farm near Douds. He was one of a family of eight children, all of whom were boys.

He was educated in the elementary schools of his home district, and then attended the academies at La Harpe, Ill., and Birmingham. Later he taught several years in Van Buren county and Kansas schools.

On November 27, 1893, he was married to Winifred Miller in Van Buren county. To this union were born three children, all of whom survive. Soon after their marriage, they moved to their present home, where he had been engaged in farming and stock raising until his health would no longer permit it.

Surviving are the widow and three children, Alma, at home; Mrs. Henry Nichols, Fairfield, and Forrest, Douds. One brother, T.J. Hanshaw, Ottumwa, and three granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Pedrick home in Douds. The Rev. Robert G. Farr and the Rev. A.W. Shackleton officiated. Interment was in Mt. Moriah cemetery. Pall bearers were Hollis Howard, Andrew Gilbert, Beryl Stagers, Edward Knecht, Harold Stump and Walter Sims.
