Keosauqua, Iowa, Nov. 3d, ’64.

Died.

In Vernon, on the morning of the 25th of October, 1864, John Hines, in the 37th year of his age.

John was born in Harden county, Kentucky, in the year 1837, and when grown up to manhood emigrated to Iowa. Although not blessed with a sound constitution, he thought it his duty to sustain the flag of his country, and last spring volunteered in the 3d Iowa Cavalry, Company G, under the gallant and patriotic Captain (now Major) McCrary, but his feeble health could not stand the fatigue incident to camp life. He laid sick in hospital for several months. About the 10th that he started home, where he remained a little over a week, then passed forever from the dreams of battle. John was an affectionate husband, a good Christian, a true patriot and an honest man. He leaves a wife and three small children to mourn his untimely death. Thus another victim has fallen by the hissing serpent of rebellion – hiss on vile snake, your hissing will soon be done. C.Wright
