RYLAND
Mary J. Ryland, nee (Harlan), was born near Baltimore, Md., August 11, 1818, and died near Bonaparte, March 15, 1899, at the advanced age of 80 years, 7 months and 4 days.
At the age of thirteen, she went to Brooke Co., W. Va., and there, June 24, 1839 was married to A. S. Ryland.
In the spring of 1842 they came to Iowa, settling at Lexington near Bonaparte. After a short time, moved to West Virginia, remaining a year, after which they returned to Iowa, settling at Bonaparte, where they resided two years, then removing to the present homestead near this place. There Mr. Ryland died April 7, 1875.
To their union have been born eleven children, the eldest Hughie, dying in infancy and Curtis V. Oct. 4, 1838, leaving to mourn the loss of their mother, five sons and four daughters.
Deceased was a kind and loving mother and was greatly respected and loved by all who knew her, her kind and cheerful disposition winning her a large circle of friends.
For the last seven years she was a great sufferer but ever endured her affliction with patience, often saying with sweet Christian resignation: “It is all for the best,” and expressing her perfect willingness and readiness to depart. “She rests from her labors, and her works do follow her.”
Funeral services were held at her late residence Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock conducted by Rev. W. H. Scofield, after which occurred the interment in the Bonaparte cemetery.
Six children, two sons and four daughters attended the services, those from a distance being: Mrs. Sarah A. Murphy, of Eldon, Ia., Mrs. Hester J. Dodds, of Kansas City, Mo., and Wm. B. Ryland, of Wayland, Mo.
