Clyde V. Brereton, 80, 402 south D. St., died at 2:46 p.m. Monday, June 14, 1993, at Jefferson County Hospital.
The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Royar officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation is open at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to First United Methodist Church.
Brereton was born Dec. 14, 1912, in Jefferson County, the son of Samuel R. and Lulu Mae Blakeley Brereton. He grew up in Fairfield and Stockport communities, attended Stockport schools, and lived his adult life in the Fairfield community. He married Ruth P. Brown on March 26, 1938, in Fairfield. He served in the Iowa State Guard during World War II. A plumber by trade, he worked for Briggs Plumbing for 27 years, at Parsons until its closing, and then for the Fairfield Community School District until retiring. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Methodist Men and a former member of Fairfield Kiwanis. He was dedicated to the youth of the community and was instrumental in helping to develop and build the baseball fields for Fairfield Little League and the American Legion Field for Babe Ruth baseball. He was active in both programs and served as district director for Babe Ruth baseball. He later worked with the Fairfield softball program at O. B. Nelson Park
Surviving are his wife; a son, Ron of Tampa, Fla.; a grandson; two brothers, Lester of Silvis, Ill., William of Libertyville; and two sisters, Marjorie Raymond of Fairfield and Mildred McDonald of Marshalltown. Two brothers, Paul and Floyd, preceded him in death.
