STANLEY CLAIR CRAWFORD
Stanley Clair Crawford, son of William and Mamie Crawford was born June 12, 1911, at Douds, Iowa.
He had spent most of his life in Douds, having graduated from the Doud-Leando high school. He moved to Des Moines a short time before he entered the United States Army in December, 1940.
He was in the 113th Cavalry at Camp Bowie and then served in the Paratroopers at Fort Benning and Fort Braggs. With his unit he sailed for the Pacific Treatre(sp) of action, October 19, 1942. He engaged in five missions in combat: Noemfoor Island, Mindoro, and Corregidor.
It was on this last mission at Corregidor that he was killed in action, Feb. 27, 1945. For his merit and wounds in action he received the Purple Heart, and for his gallantry, valor in the face of death, he was awarded posthumously the Silver Star.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Minnie Crawford of Douds, Iowa; his son, Dennis of Bay City, Mich.; his sisters, Mrs. Mildred Myers of Trenton, Mo.; Mrs. Margaret Coppock of Houston, Tex.; and Mrs. Helen Evans, and a brother, Robert, both of Des Moines.
Funeral was held at 2 p.m. Oct. 21, at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds. Interment was made in Zion Lutheran cemetery.
