Stephen I. Cox
Stephen I. Cox, 65, a former Burlington, West Burlington and Bonaparte resident who has lived in the Gilman area the past year, died Saturday, June 25, 1983 at his home.
Mr. Cox was born in Croton on February 26, 1918, to Joseph and Della Kirsch Cox. He married Velma Frost Shearer in Bonaparte on October 28, 1950.
Mr. Cox served as superintendent of the Bonaparte, West Burlington and Clear Creek school systems, as principal of Lisbon High School, and worked at the National Research Bureau, Burlington, before moving to Gilman last year. He received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Iowa, and served with the Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the Iowa State Education Association and the Bonaparte Masonic Lodge.
Surviving: his wife; his mother, Bonaparte; a son, Bill, Gilman; a stepson, Lanny Shearer, Lakestation, Indiana; three sisters, Nellie Miller, Indianola, Hattie Church, Bonaparte, and Ina Osburn, Iowa City; three grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at the Bonaparte Cemetery.
