GOOD-BYE, SKIPPER1!

Past State Commander Glenn C. Haynes has "gone on the most beautiful adventure of life."

Death from a heart attack came to the beloved, distinguished Iowa citizen-soldier at his home in Fort Madison early Saturday morning, June 6.

He died as he lived-with superb courage.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Centerville, his birthplace and boyhood home, from where he departed when still in his teens to quietly give more than 45 years of consecrated service to God and country, both in peace and war.

Hundreds of floral offerings, one of which was from comrades in the American army in Ireland, the overflowed auditorium and the throng of people in the street attested the affection in which he was held.

Simplicity such as he desired marked the obsequies. Pipe organ music, Scripture reading and prayer by his pastor, Rev. L.J. Shonefelt, short tributes by two of his friends, Lieut. Gen. Mat A. Tinley and Editor Frank Miles of the Iowa Legionaire, then a few moving words and benediction by Rev. R. Bruce West, of Davenport.

The Centerville company of the Iowa State Guard and scores of Legionaires and Rainbow comrades were in the procession to the cemetery behind colors of the state departments of The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, United Spanish War Veterans and a number of local posts of neighboring communities.

Committal services at the grave were brief-only a prayer by Rev. Shonefelt and taps blown by a comrade. Interment was by the side of his father E.C. Haynes, a Civial war veteran, who lost an arm in battle.
