Obituary of John Calhoun

John, son of John and Isabel Calhoun was born at Winchester, Iowa, in the spring of 1840, died at his home Wednesday morning, April 20, 1931, aged 91 years. Almost all his life was spent at Winchester except one year in California to which place he migrated in a covered wagon.

He was married to Miss Asebeth Whittlesey, Feb. 2, 1866, to this union was born one son, Harry, who died March 2, 1886 at the age of 20 years.

Mrs. Calhoun, his wife, preceded him in death some fourteen years ago. He then made his home with Ira Beknap in Kansas City for awhile, then with others, but finally returned to his old home where for fifty years he had lived and finally died.

While bathing in cold water in California he received a nervous shock which took away his hearing almost entirely, this was his great handicap. He was a good neighbor, friend, citizen, attended church with his family. He is held in great respect. He has been lonesome for some years and desired to depart and be at rest.

'Life's labor done, as sinks the clay, Light from its load the spirit flew away.'

Services were held in the Winchester church and conducted by Rev. F. M. james, May 1, Interment in the Winchester cemetery, by the side of his wife and son Harry.

**I research the CALHOUN lineage.**
