John Kenneth Matheson, son of Alex and Jane Matheson, was born Feb. 15, 1864 near Jacksonville, Ill. The following year the family moved to Marion county, Iowa, and in 1872 to Van Buren county.

On May 20, 1896, he was married to Miss Louie Starr. No children came to this home. A neice, Nellie Roberts was taken into the home at the age of three years and raised as their own until her marriage to Ancel Parker. Miriam, their daughter was the pleasure of Mr. Matheson's life the past two and a half years.

Mr. Matheson served Van Buren county as deputy sheriff four years from 1897 to 1901, and four years as clerk from 1901 to 1905.

In early life he united with the Keosauqua Christian church under the ministry of P.D. Holloway. Although ill health has prevented his regular attendance recently he attended the homecoming services on Sunday, Oct. 1, and seemed to greatly enjoy the fellowship with friends.

One week later Sunday, Oct. 8, he was summoned to the Greater Homecoming and the broader fellowship of those who have gone before, lacking four months and one week of attaining the allotted three score and ten years of this life.

J.K. Matheson was a good man and a good citizen - quiet, steady, prudent, kindly, and of unquestionable.

He is survived by his wife, two brothers, George and Grant of Keosauqua; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Wolf of Keosauqua, and Mrs. Edith Newman of Ottumwa, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Christian church, the pastor, Rev. C.V. Allison officiating. Interment in the Fellows cemetery.
