Obituary of Benjamin Pool

Benjamin Pool was born Feb. 17, 1841, in Washington county, Ohio. He came with his parents to Van Buren county, Iowa, when a boy 10 years of age, where he lived most of his life with the exception of 4 years which as a young man were spent in the west in the states of Montana and Nevada. Returning from there he located on a farm in Lick Creek township, where he resided until a few years ago when he retired and came to Leando to spend the declining years of his life.

He was married Rachel Robinson, July 2, 1872, who departed this life Nov. 30, 1905. To this union one child was born, which died in infancy. This child's place in the family was taken by Alonzo D. Pool, who was adopted when but three years of age. Later on another child, Ray Jamison, was taken into the home when but six weeks old. In the course of the years several nieces and nephews grew up under the care and admonition of this couple.

About seven years ago he was married the second time to Lavina Ratcliff. His sickness, pneumonia with complications which brought about his death, was only about a week's duration, during which time he was tenderly waited upon and cared for by his son Alonzo, his sister Mrs. James, brother Enoch and the Mrs. Ella and Lilly Salters, who remained with him until his demise, which occurred Tuesday, April 7, 1918.

He is survived by his son Alonzo D. Pool of Douds-Leando, Ray Jamison of Kilbourne, one sister Mrs. James of Douds-Leando, two brothers Samuel Pool of Douds-Leando and Enoch Pool of Agency, Iowa, two half-sisters Mrs. Alice Brown and Mrs. Ann Brown and one half-brother Ed. Brown, all of Peoria, Illinois, seven grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church in Leando in charge of the pastor Rev. E.S. Hehner. Interment in Leando cemetery.
