HESTER ANN BROOKS

Hester Ann Brooks was born August 11, 1848, in Virginia, and departed this life June 13, 1930, at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 2 days, at her home four miles north of Floris.

She was united in marriage to Isaac Brooks in 1869 in Ohio, coming to Iowa the following year, making Iowa their home. To this union six children were born, four of whom prceeded(sp) her in death, two dying in infancy, Martha aged 17, died in 1890, and Lutisha, aged 30, died in 1906. Two children, Mrs. Ella Holcomb of Leando and Oliver, who lives at home survive; three grandchildren, Mrs. Gladys Holcomb Whitney of Glendale, Ariz., Dale Holcomb of Leando, and Keith Holcomb of Texas; Marvel Crist, who made her home with her and helped care for her in her last illness, also survive.

Mrs. Brooks was converted and joined the Baptist church at Providence in Van Buren county in 1875, and has lived a faithful Christian life. She was a devoted mother and a friend to old and young and always took an interest in the affairs of the community.

Funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday afternoon, June 15, at 11 a.m., Rev. Arthur Stookesberry of Floris in charge. She was laid to rest in the Syhawk cemetery by the side of her husband.
