HUGH GILBERT
**Handwritten: 1929

Hugh, eldest son of George and Castella Gilbert, was born at Kilbourne, Iowa, December 25, 1879, and died on his farm near Kilbourne, May 17, 1929, being at the time of his passing 49 years, 4 months and 22 days old. He was married to Ethel Towne, at Kilbourne, December 25, 1905. To this union were born two sons and one daughter, Hubert, Sterling, and Genevieve, all at home to help and comfort the sorrowing wife and mother.

He was converted and united with the M.E. church at Kilbourne in March 1916. He is survived by his mother Mrs. Castella Gilbert, five sisters, Nell, Julia, and Gladys, of Kilbourne, Dora, of near Douds, Mamie, of Iowa City; three brothers, Clarence, of near Birmingha, Emmet and Sam Jr., of Kilbourne, besides a host of relatives and friends. Hugh was of a quiet and unassuming nature, honest and industrious, liked and respected by all who knew him and many will miss him as a man, a neighbor and friend. He was decidedly a home man, devoted to his wife and children, his home meant everything to him. Among his last acts were deeds of kindness to those who needed them. We cannot understand why he was called in the prime of life.

Not now, but in the coming years
It may be in the better land
We'll know the cause of all our tears,
Yes, there, up there, we'll understand.

Brief life is here, our portion
Brief sorrow, short lived care
The life that has no ending
The tearless life, is there.

Funeral services were held in the M.E. church, at Kilbourne, at 2:30 o'clock, Sunday, conducted by Rev. J.J. Brabbs, his friend and former pastor, now residing at Oskaloosa, Iowa, assisted by Rev. Campbell, the present pastor. Interment was in the cemetery near by. He was followed to his last resting place by a large concourse of relatives and friends. The flora offerings were many and beautiful.
