BENTONSPORT.

Death of Mr. Geo. L. Moore, a Highly Respected and Beloved Citizen- Biograhical Sketch.

It is our sad duty to record the death of Mr. George L. Moore, of this place, which occurred at 9 o'clock Wednesday evening, June 21, 1899. The news came like a shock to this community, as his illness was of brief duration. The universal expression of sentiment is, that there is no one left who can fill his place. His counsel was sought after by all classes and his judgement and advice were unusually sound. He was as good an all around citizen as could be found in any community. In church relationship, he was a Presbyterian; in politics, he was a republican. For many years he belonged to the Masonic fraternity. Mr. George L. Moore was a pioneer of the pioneers; having come to this county with his parents in 1839. They settled on 160 acres of land southeast of Pierceville in Harrisburg township and lived there for many years.

George Lafayette Moore was born in Wilmington, Dearborn county, Indiana, April 4, 1826, came to Iowa, then a territory, when thirteen years old, and grew to manhood in this county. Went to California in 1852. Returned two years later, and August, 29, 1854, was married to Miss Anna Brown at Bentonsport. He has spent most of his married life in merchandising. He owned a good sized farm adjoining town, but his sons took care of that while he gave almost his entire care to the store. He has been a member of the Presbyterian church at this place for over forty years, and was the main stay and support in the later years. He will be greatly missed in all the walks of life. An honorable man, an upright citizen, a sincere Christian, a devoted husband, and a loving father has gone to his last rest crowned with the benedictions of a sorrowing people. The funeral was held at the old homestead and the services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.S. McElhiney of Fairfield. The interment was at the Bentonsport cemetery.

Those in attendance at the funeral from abroad were Mr. Wm. Sinton and Mrs. Grace Steele of Keokuk, Mrs. Mary M. Easter of Albia, Mr. Robert Moore of Glasgow, Mrs. Georgia Hurd of Kansas City, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Mason of Eldon, Chancey Booth and wife of Farmington, Geo. Booth and wife, Archie McDonald and wife, ??? Henry and wife, Geo. Merideth and ???aweaver and wife of Bonaparte, Mrs. E. Manning, Mrs. A.G. ??ott, Mr. John Burns and wife ?????, Joseph A. Keck and Henry Keck of Utica, Arnold Barker and family, Frank Perkins and family, J. Munroe and family of Mt. Zion; Mr. and Mrs. Thornley and Mr. Glenndening of Batavia; Rev. Schofield and and Welch.

Mrs. W.A. Jones and daughter Carried with Miss Tesse Bennett attended the funeal of Geo. L. Moore at Bentonsport last Friday. About 16 years ago John Moore, who had been a pioneer of Dearborn county, Ind., with two daughters, and seven stalwart sons, came to Van Buren county and settled near Bentonrport(sp). They were all large and strong men. There is now but one of the family remaining, Robert Moore, aged 81, who lives near Glasgow in Jefferson county. In 1849 George Moore went to California overland with an ox team. In two or three years he returned to Bentonsport where he lived continuously until the day of his death. Bentonsport will be lonely without Geo. Moore. In 50 years there was rarely a day when he did not kindly greet the people of that town. It will be a long time before he is forgotten and when the influence of his upright life will cease to be felt and venerated.
