Dr. Bell rites Tuesday

Funeral services for Dr. Jay Q. Bell, 204 Iowa Ave., will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Carl Riggs officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham.

Bell, 61, practiced veterinary medicine in Fairfield for 29 years. He died Saturday at 4 a.m. at University Hospitals in Iowa City where he had been a patient for five weeks.

Bell was born Jan. 7, 1921 at Milton, the son of Robert Clayton and Rhoda Elva Marshall Bell. He attended Parsons College for two years and received his veterinary medicine degree at Iowa State University in 1951. He spent two years in South Dakota before beginning his practice in Fairfield in 1953.

He was married to Dorothy R. Topping Aug. 27, 1948 at Stockport. Surviving are his wife, two daughters and two sons: Sue Ellen Bell, Ames; Martha Alice Bell, Palatine, Ill.; David Bell, Decorah; and Scott Bell, Vera Cruz, Mexico. Also surviving are two brothers, Clayton B. Bell, Milton; and Dr. Max E. Bell, Kirksville, Mo.

Bell was an elder of the First United Presbyterian Church. He served three terms as a director of the Fairfield Community School District. He also served on the board of directors of the Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce and the First National Bank. He was a past president of the Fairfield Lions Club and a member of the American Veterinary Medical Assn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Behner Funeral Home.
