Death of a Prominent ... Leader and Attorney-Manning's Party.Friday, June 22, occurred the death of James M. McCougham, a prominent attorney and democratic leader of Des Moines. Mr. McCougham has been ill for several months but not withstanding his death has been expected for several weeks by intimate friends, the news was a great shock to his many business acquaintances and friends throughout the city. The following is an extract from the Daily Iowa Capitol:
"Mr. McCougham has long been considered one of the leading democrats of the state, and was chairman of the democratic state convention in 1896. He was regarded one of the most conservative among the party, leaders, and as such occupied a high place in the esteem of his political opponents. He was repeatedly asked to run for office, but invariably declined saying he did not seek political honors. He was ever ready to speak, however, and in this capacity rendered invaluable service to his party. Three years ago there was a powerful movement among members of both parties to induce him to become a candidate for district judge, but he refused. Twice he has been urged to accept nomination for congress, but would not listen to the proposition. His one aim apparently has been to attain a high eminence in his profession, and in that he made a conspicuous success." Polk County Bar Association passed resolutions of respect and in a body attended the funeral which was held at his late home on Eighth street, at 2:30 o'clock, Sunday afternoon.
