William Gregson

William Gregson was born in Philadelphia, Pa., May 3rd, 1830, where he remained until 18 years of age, then removing to Cincinnati, Ohio. He came to Iowa in May 1851, and located at Bentonsport. In October, 1855, he was married to Miss Sarah Bragg. To this union there were born three sons, one dying in infancy; the other two sons survive him, Frank being in St. Paul, Minn., and Frederick in Oregon. His wife died in January, 1862. In May, 1862, he crossed the plains to the far west and after two years went to the Isthmus of Panama and was employed on the construction of the railroad between Panama and Aspinwall, finally being promoted to superintendent. In 1875, his health failing him, he returned to Iowa, and on the 7th of October in the same year was married to Miss Jane A. McVity. To this union was born one son. Mr. Gregson died January 2nd, 1901, aged 70 years and 8 months, leaving a wife and three sons to mourn their loss. He united with the Presbyterian church February 24th, 1856, not being an active member on account of poor health but always being a liberal supporter of the church. He joined the Independent Order of Odd Fellows on July 31st, 1851, being initiated at the first meeting after the lodge was organized, and continued a faithful member up to the time of his death. He was a very conscientious, honest and upright man. He died without enemies and highly spoken of and esteemed by all who knew him. The funeral services were held at his residence, conducted by Rev. Rollingson, of the M.E. church, who preached a very impressive sermon to a large concourse of people, after which the Odd Fellows took charge of the remains and buried them according to their ritual.
