JOHN W. OWINGS

John William, eldest son of Douglas and Ma??? Owings, was born May 17, 1839, in Posie Co., Ind., and departed this life Dec., 27, 1927, aged 88 years, 7 months and 10 days.

On Aug. 26, 1861, he enlisted from Van Buren Co., Ia., in the Civil War service, and was mustered into service at Keokuk, Aug. 30, 1861, as private of Co. G., 3rd Reg., Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, under Capt. E. Mayne, and Col. C. Bussey to serve three years or during the war. He was honorably discharged at Fulton, Mo., Feb. 25, 1862, on account of disability.

On April 26, 1863, he was married to Hannah Rupe and four children were born to bless this this union, namely: Mrs. Belle Hill, of Bentonsport; William Edward, who died at the age of 8 years; Mrs. Julia Carter, deceased, and Mrs. Fred Winkler of Bentonsport, Iowa.
