Howard Davis was born in Hoskinville, Ohio, May 20, 1842. He came to Washington county, Iowa, when quite young. From there he went to Scotland county, Mo., where he remained for several years. In course of time he came back to Iowa, locating at Mt. Sterling in November, 1874.
He was married to Elizabeth Stewart in Scotland county, Missouri, August 17, 1862. They were blessed with seven children, three boys and four girls, the oldest boy dying in infancy. The girls are all in Mt. Sterling, Clarence resides in Bonaparte and Nathaniel in the state of Washington. All were at the home for the funeral except the last named son.
Brother Davis united with the M.C. church under the pastorate of Rev. C.W. Wilson. He was a lover of the good and looked with contempt upon the bad. He lived a sweet life in the home and would often say toward the end of his journey: "O, you are all so good to me." He was often found in communion with his Heavenly Father and was prepared to meet Him. He was in the employ of the railroad company for twenty-six years. He died in Longmont, Colorado, May 24, 1905. Peace be to his memory. Funeral services were held in his home church at Mt. Sterling, after which the remains were laid to rest in the nearby cemetery.
