Arthur Umphrey died on Friday Jan. 18, at White Deer, Texas, and funeral services were held there on the following Sunday
**Handwritten: 1929

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nettie Cocherell Umphrey, and one daughter, Mrs. Lola Carter of Los Angeles; also by one brother, Dr. George Umphrey of Keosauqua, and two sisters, Mrs. Josie Caughlan of White Deer, Texas, and Mrs. Ada Jackson of Clariden, Texas.

Mr. Umphrey was born about sixty years ago in Hancock county, Ill., on a farm not far from Warsaw. His father was. James T. Umphrey.

He learned the blacksmith trade when a young man in the shop of his brother, George, at New Sharon, Iowa. He located to Bonaparte about thirty-two years ago in the blacksmith business in partnership with his brother-in-law, George Jackson, in a shop on what is now the property of the John S. Moore estate in west Bonaparte.

He afterward bought out the interest of his partner, Mr. Jackson, who moved to Texas, and moved the shop to its present location on Second street where he continued the business for a number of years.

Mr. Umphrey was a member of the Masonic, I.O.O.F., Modern Woodmen and A.O.U.W. lodges of Bonaparte and was a faithful and regular attendant of the meetings of the same.

His health began to fail several years ago, the probably cause of same being the emery dust which he had inhaled while grinding discs in his shop. His circulation became poor and he gradually grew weaker until he was compelled to quit work. He retired from business about a year ago, sold his residence property and household goods last spring and went to Texas, hoping that the climate there would be beneficial. He also made a visit with his daughter in California, but returned to Texas last fall and remained there until his death.
