Another of Van Buren county's devoted christian mothers has passed to her reward. Mrs. Mary Edwards Ely, for many years a resident of Harrisburg township, died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Ambrose Warner, near Utica, Saturday evening Oct. 27, in the 76th year of her age. Mrs. Ely's maiden name was Edwards. She wsa born in Hampshire county, West Virginia, Feby. 9, 1831. On the 24th day of October, 1850, she was united in marriage with John W. Ely, who was also a native of West Virginia, and who died fifteen years ago. Six years after their marriage they moved to Illinois and in 1869 became residents of Van Buren county. Mrs. (line unreadable) . . . ren, Robt. E, living in Mt. Pleasant; B. Frank, living on a farm near Birmingham, and Anna I., wife of Ambrose Warner of Washington township.

When fifteen years of age she professed religion and united with the Methodist church, and for sixty years enjoyed a consciousness of salvation through faith in Christ. In accordance with a request made by her at the time of her husband's death, he funeral was preached by a former pastor, Rev. T.S. Pool of Fairfield in her home church at Utica, assisted by her pastor Rev. W.H. Jones, a large number of neighbors and friends being present. The remains were laid beside those of her husband in the cemetery at Bentonsport. The funeral was under the direction of an intimate friend of the family, Geo. A. Demple of Keokuk. - - - - T.S.
