Augustus Whitlock was born in Germany, Feb. 22, 1829. He came with his parents to America in 1837, when he was 8 years old. They settled in Farmington township, Van Buren county, and there he resided until he was 21 years of age. In that year he crossed the plains and went to California, returning to Iowa four years later. He was married to Miss Sarah M. Beck, Sept. 24, 1854, with whom he lived nearly 52 years. They located on a farm in Harrisburg township, Van Buren county, the year of their marriage and resided there until 1868. On Nov. 24 of that year they moved to Bonaparte where they resided continuously until his death and where he has been engaged in business.

Eight children were born to their union, five daughters and three sons. of these the following have preceded their father in death: Caroline Catharine, Mary Helen and Ida Alice. He leaves to mourn for him his companion, three sons, Geo. F. of Wichita, Kans., William H. and John B. of Bonaparte, two daughters, Mrs. Anna A. Cates of Bonaparte and Mrs. Lottie R. Eddy of Farmington, iowa, one sister, Mrs. Caroline Korfage of Kansas City, Mo., and a brother, Henry Whitlock of Farmington, Iowa, also five grand children, one great grand child.

Mr. Whitlock died in Bonaparte, Iowa, July 23, 1906, aged 77 years, 5 months and 1 day. The funeral took place on Thursday, July 26, 1906, Rev. G.W. Barber of Unionville, Iowa, conducting the services.
