Mary Anne Workman was born at St. Clairsville, Belmong, Co., Ohio, February 23, 1845. She was left an orphan at an early age, but loving relatives and friends supplied the places of her lost parents, as she had no brothers or sisters. She was married to Wm. H. Carter in September, 1865, and to the union were born three children, Robert W. who died August, 1868; Millie, now Mrs. Edward Bonbright of Portland, Oregon, and Wm. H. Carter Jr., of Bentonsport. She also leaves four grandsons and one little grand-daughter, to whom "grandma: will be a fond memory in the future years. Several years since she united with the M.E. church at Bentonsport and has ever since been identified with this church.

She was a devoted wife and mother, thinking more of the faithful discharge of home duties, and "looking well to the ways of her household" than to the claims o society. She was a good friend and a kind neighbor. For two years her health had been failing and for the last two months she had grown rapidly worse, and although feeling that the end was approaching, she bore her suffering without a murmur. The angel of death relieved her suffering at noon Friday, July 31, 1908.

The funeral service was held from the Presbyterian church in Bentonsport, Sunday p.m., at 2 o'clock, Rev. Trenery of Bonaparte officiating. The casket was covered with beautiful floral tributes, expressing the esteem in which she was held. Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were R.S. Carter, of Montrose; Mr. and Mrs. John Burkholder, of Ft. Madison, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. George Hollingshead, of Knoxville, Iowa, and Mr. Gilchrist and daughter, Of Davis county.
