Sarah McGowan was born in Warren county, Kentucky, May 3, 1817. October 3, 1833, she was united in marriage to John Lorton. In the fall of 1836 they left their home in Greene county, Ill., and moved to Iowa, where she has since resided.

For many years, they, together faced the pleasures and sorrow of pioneer life, then one day father was taken and mother was left. God gave to the home and to the this mother, ten children, of whom two boys and two girls preceded her to the home beyong. Six are left, sorrowing because mother is gone and yet not sorrowing as those without hope.

For many years Mrs. Lorton had been a sufferer and since last February she had failed rapidly, becoming almost helpless. Patiently and cheerfully she bore her afflictions and seemed ever submissive to the Father's will. She oftentimes expressed her willingness and readiness to depart from this life. Aug. 11, 1902, at the home of her son Andy in Vernon she passed through the portals into the life beyond, having attained the age of 85 years, 3 months and 8 days. She leaves to mourn their loss, 6 children, 24 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild, also many friends and neighbors.
