Paul, the 10 year old son of Rev. and Mrs. W. _. Jones of this city, died at the hospital in Keokuk at 2:45 p.m.last Wednesday, whither he had been taken with the hope that relief might be obtained and the life prolonged to the heart broken parents and family. The end came peacefully shortly after the child reached the hospital, the cause being ulcerative appendicitis. (Handwritten: Jan.23.07)
The boy was taken ill Sunday and as he grew worse a physician was called who diagnosed the case as above stated. Every effort was made to relieve the sufferer and this failing, an operation was decided on. A sudden turn for the worse Tuesday night prompted this decision and at noon Wednesday the child accompanied by the parents and physician went to Keokuk. (handwritten: Jan.23.1907)
At 3 o'clock the sad death was announced by wire to the friends in this city and universal mourning was the result. Paul was a friendly little gentleman and soon won the hearts of all with who he came in contact. At school he was a favorite of teacher and scholars and was bright in his studies. All loved him and deeply deplore the sudden termination of the young life. (handwritten: Jan.23.07)
The parents were prostrated with the keenness of the grief, and received the loving consolation and sympathy of our citizens, who hastened to allev?????, as much as possible the great pain which accompanied the loss.
The body was returned to the home in this city Thursday morning and on Friday at 2:00 p.m. services were held at the M.E. church, after which the body was returned to the home to await the morning train when it was taken to Ottumwa for burial.
