Mrs. Newman Rites Pending

STOCKPORT - Mrs. Bessie E. Newman, 89, native of Stockport, died Thursday at 8:15 p.m. at the van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua.

She had entered the hospital Thursday morning after being a patient at the Moore Nursing Home in Stockport since January, 1970.

The body is at the Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua where last rites are pending.

Bessie E. Newman was born in Stockport Sept. 27, 1883, the first child to be born in that community after it had been established as a town. She was the daughter of George W. and Elnora Walker Johnston.

She married Walter Thomas Newman March 28, 1907. He died July 28, 1955.

The couple spent their entire married life on a farm three miles north of Stockport.

Two children survive. They are Hugh G. Newman, Stockport, and Mrs. Thelma C. Miner, Tallahassie, Fla. Also three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one brother, Walker Johnston.

One sister and one brother preceded Mrs. Newman in death.

Sunday Rites

STOCKPORT - Last rites for Mrs. Bessie E. Newman will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Stockport United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Newman, 89, died Thursday night at Van Buren Memorial Hospital. Burial will be in Spencer Cemetery. Arrangements are in charge of the Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.
