--Last week's Fairfield Ledger gave notice of the death of John W. Quillen at his home in that city, Wednesday, Nov. 30. Mr. Quillen was well known in Van Buren county where he resided for a number of years and where he did business until poor health prevented. From a sketch of his life in the paper named we take the following: "John W. Quillen, a wellknown citizen and business man of Fairfield for almost forty years, died at his home in this city Wednesday evening. He had been an invalid for a long time, but death finally came as a result of a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Quillen was born in Harrison county, Ohio, Oct. 28, 1840, and came to Van Buren county, this state, with his mother at the age of 15. He came to this county in 1866, and two years later was admitted to the conference of the Methodist Episcopal church on trial and was a colleague of the late Rev. O.C. Shelton. Later he was in business in this city as agent for the Bonaparte Woolen mills, in the sale of mercandise(sp) and as a buyer of wool for the Bonaparte people and the Amana society. He had a wide acquaintance all over southeastern Iowa. * * *
Mr. Quillen was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church most of his life and was an active and appreciative Odd Fellow. He was a man of excellent habits, honest and industrious and had many friends in the community."
