Ruth Pettit was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, Nov. 10, 1829. Was united in marriage to Geo. T. Steele Sept. 1st, 1850. Soon after their marriage they came to Bentonsport, Iowa, where six children were born to them. One son died in infancy. Her husband died at Bloomington, Illinois, Oct. 14, 1865. Shortly after the death of her husband she moved to her farm near Lebanon. Early in life she and her husband were converted and united with the Presbyterian church at Bentonsport. Later in life she became a charter member of the Lebanon church, where her funeral occurred Oct. 4th conducted by Rev. Hahn. She had been a patient sufferer for a number of years, and for some time her suffering was intense, but her faith was bright and on Oct. 3rd, 1900, she passed to her reward. Her only daughter Mrs. Luella Seamster, and sons Clement and James, were with her in her last trying hours. Many friends were ready to comfort and assist for all who knew her loved her.
