Mary Bales Proudfit

Mary Bales Proudfit, 93, of New Virginia died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at her home of a heart ailment.

Services were held at the Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.

Mrs. Proudfit was born April 22, 1907, in Stockport, the daughter of Thomas Earl and Myrtle Shelman Bales. She married Don Proudfit. He preceded her in death.

She graduated in the class of 1924 from Stockport High School, lived most of her life in Des Moines before moving to New Virginia four years ago. She retired after working for 61 years as a legal secretary for the late W. Allen Whitfield and his son Harlan Whitfield.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of Nile, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, Association for Office Professionals, Pioneers of Polk County Genealogical Society and Ancient Toltec Rite Topeka Council.

Surviving are her sister-in-law, Cecilia Bales of Manson and various cousins.
