KEOSAUQUA’S MAYOR IS DEAD
CRAIG MANNING DIES SUDDENLY
AFTER SHORT ILLNESS WITH
A CARBUNCLE.

Keosauqua, Nov. 14 [1916]. – A carbuncle on his jaw, which led to blood poisoning caused the sudden death of Craig I. Manning, mayor of Keosauqua, at his home here at 9 o’clock this morning.

Mr. Manning, who was born in Keosauqua, forty-four years ago next Christmas day, had always lived here and was known to practically everyone in the city and environs. His death comes as a tremendous shock to the entire community. His illness was of just a few days duration and had not been considered especially dangerous.

Of his immediate family he leaves his widow and one child, Madeline, aged eleven years. His mother, Mrs. E. Manning, who has lived with him in the old family home since the death of his father, also survives and in addition there is a sister and a brother, Mrs. Kate Parrott and S. W. Manning of this city and two half brothers, Calvin Manning of Ottumwa and W. S. Manning of Detroit.

No arrangements have been made for the funeral.

Obituary of C. I. Manning

Craig Ives Manning, youngest child of the late Edwin Manning and his wife Nannie Bryant Manning, was born in Keosauqua Dec. 25th, 1872, and died Tuesday morning, November 14th, 1916, at his home. His age was 43 years, 10 months and 19 days. He received his education in the public schools of Keosauqua and in an academy in Davenport. On the 20th of November, 1901, he was married to Edna Madeline Therme. Three children were born to this union, two of whom died in infancy. The daughter, Edna Madeline, survives her father. Mr. Manning also is survived by his wife, mother, sister Mrs. Kate Parrot, and three brothers, Stanley W. of Keosauqua, Calvin of Ottumwa, and William S. of Detroit. He had also five nephews and two nieces. In his earlier business career Mr. Manning was extensively engaged in farming and stock raising. Later he has been active as a wool merchant. He has been widely engaged in banking too, being president of the Keosauqua State Bank, vice-president of a bank in Cantril, and a large share-holder in the Iowa National Bank of Ottumwa. Mr. Manning has served on the common council of Keosauqua, and has been three times chosen by his fellow citizens to be mayor of the town. He was a public-spirited man, generous with his time and efforts for things that he esteemed of value and importance to the community. He was a very friendly man. He had no enemies. He had as many well-wishers as he had acquaintances. It was easy for anybody to like Craig Manning. His death came as a distinct shock. We knew he was sick, seriously sick, but we expected, at least, speaking for myself, I expected his recovery. I counted on his age, only the noon-tide of the years, as a great element in his favor. But our promise of years is a conditional promise. With none of us is it absolute. The fact that Craig was less than half the age at which his father died did not count at all. A friend of his and mine said to me, “This town can’t afford to lose Craig Manning.” Even so. Yet we have lost him. And it is more than a loss to kindred and friends. It is a public loss. – (From the funeral address of Rev. C. E. Perkins).

The funeral, which was held at the home on Thursday afternoon, was one of the largest ever held here, people attending from all parts of the county, as well as from Ottumwa, Eldon, etc. Some fifty automobiles brought people to the funeral, and the auto hearse from Farmington conveyed the remains to the grave. The casket was covered with a rich profusion of flowers. The services were conducted by Rev. C. E. Perkins, assisted by Rev. J. C. Behrens. Music was furnished by a choir composed of Mesdames Oscar McCrary and Joe Price, and Messrs. C. K. Miller and R. R. McBeth, with Mrs. C. K. Miller as accompanist. Paulbearers [sic] were: H. E. Rees, Sam Brownlee, U. G. Monnet, H. B. Sloan, Emery Plowman, J. A. Craig. Interment was in the Purdom cemetery.
